Career Exploration Lesson

Career exploration is a powerful way to help high school students connect classroom learning to their future goals. In a Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) setting, it allows students to reflect on their interests, identify their strengths, and gain insight into a variety of career paths, especially those in human services, education, nutrition, and design. Teachers can empower students to make informed decisions about college, technical training, and workforce entry by integrating hands-on projects, guest speakers, and personality or skills assessments. Plus, it helps students see the real-world value of what they’re learning right now.

Here are the Downloadable Lesson Plan Elements for the Career Exploration Lesson:

Materials Needed for the Career Exploration Lesson:

  • Fact or Fiction Career Exploration Bell Ringers
  • Career Exploration BINGO boards, vocabulary terms, and dry-erase sleeves (or print).
  • Career Clusters Whodidit Game (printed)

Procedure for Teaching the Career Exploration Lesson:

  1. Present the Fact or Fiction Career Exploration Bell Ringers to students and see how many they get right. This can spark some fun conversations as well.
  2. Give each student a blank BINGO board from the Career Exploration BINGO game and have them fill in their board using the vocabulary terms included.
  3. Draw terms one at a time or the definitions to make it more challenging. The student or students that get BINGO first wins.
  4. Print the Whodidit clues and spread them around the classroom. Have students read about Career Clusters and highlight important information.
  5. Using their clue recording sheets, have them move around the room, reading the clues and narrowing down the culprit.
